Conil in 3 days without a car: my walking route from the old town
Almost every guest tells me, key still warm in their hand: “so what do I do here for three days?”
My answer is always the same: leave the car. Conil is made for walking. The apartment is in the old quarter, so from your door the market, beach, tower and tapas bars are less than ten minutes away. What follows is a suggested itinerary, ordered as I’d live it myself on any long weekend.
Day 1 — The town: market, old quarter and first beach
Morning (9:00–13:00). Start where the real Conil day begins: the Mercado de Abastos, right across from the apartment. Fruit, fish that came in that morning.
From there, old quarter without a map: whitewashed alleys, geraniums, courtyards. Climb Torre Guzmán when it’s open — the view of the white rooftops reaching for the sea is the trip photo — and pass by Santa Catalina church and Plaza de España, which at mid-morning has that quiet village bustle.
Lunch (14:00). In Conil they eat late and well. Choose any bar in the old quarter with a short menu: that usually means fresh cooking. Try ortiguillas or tuna with onions.
Afternoon (17:00–20:00). First trip down to Los Bateles, our town beach. Eight to ten minutes from home. At sunset, walk north along the promenade and you’ll see why this is called the Costa de la Luz: the seven o’clock light can’t be bought with money.
Night. Tapas in the centre. And remember dinner here is at ten; if you eat at eight you’ll be dining alone.
Day 2 — Serious beach: the coves of Roche
Morning. Today’s the short excursion: the coves of Roche, north (fifteen minutes by car; there’s a bus in season). Bring water, a hat and shoes for the descent: they’re cliff paths, with their slope, but the prize is fine sand, clear water and silence.
My favorites: Camarón and Puntalejos for being accessible, Cala Lee if you want the feeling of discovery. Go down with the falling tide: when the tide comes in they lose much of their sand.
Lunch. Either a chiringuito at Fuente del Gallo on the way, or back home to cook — the market is still where you left it yesterday.
Day 3 — Cliff walking and old town tapas
Morning. If there’s one walk to do in a week, it’s the cliff of Roche. Head north along the coast: Fuente del Gallo, and from there the path that runs along the top of the cliff, with the coves of Roche appearing below one after another — Roqueo, Camarón, Puntalejos, Cala Lee. In the distance, on clear days, you can see Cape Trafalgar with its lighthouse.
Allow around an hour and a half to the coves area from the old quarter, and the same back. It’s mostly flat: what tires you isn’t the gradient, it’s the sun. Go early in the morning or in the last two hours before sunset — there’s no shade, no fountains, and in July-August midday is a bad idea.
Lunch. Back in the old quarter. If you followed my advice, you already have provisions from the market — here’s my guide to what I buy and how I cook it.
Farewell evening. Last tapas crawl through the old town. Sit somewhere with a view of the square, order a nice wine and don’t rush. Tomorrow you go home, but Conil stays.
Three days is enough to scratch the surface. If you want more: yes, parking in August is a thing — and here’s the beach guide so you don’t lose time on day one.
