Weekend agenda in Cádiz: 12 plans for the October long weekend
The first big autumn long weekend is coming loaded. From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October (with Monday the 12th a public holiday, so you can stretch any of these plans) the province of Cádiz has an agenda that rarely comes along: world-class beach soccer selections, a historic grand procession, a festival in the middle of a natural park and, in Conil, a weekend devoted body and soul to the chickpea. Here are the highlights, day by day, with links to find out more.
Friday 9: the weekend kicks off
- Mundialito Beach Soccer (El Puerto de Santa María, 9–11). The Real Plaza de Toros becomes an international arena: the men’s bracket features Spain, Brazil, Portugal and Paraguay; the women’s, Spain, Italy, Ukraine and Brazil. League format, free entry and live on Teledeporte. All the details on the town hall’s website.
- Sancti Petri SUP Race (Chiclana, 9–12). The sixth edition brings some 150 top national stand up paddle athletes to La Barrosa beach, with ProSUP League races on Saturday and Sunday. A free show by the sea.
- Open-air cinema (Chiclana, Friday 9, 21:30). Free drive-in session at the Las Albinas del Toro fairground showing “Gran Turismo”, with subtitles. Arrive around 20:15 to park comfortably.
- Oktoberfest (El Puerto, 9–11). Live music and a German atmosphere in Plaza de Castillo.
- Tarifa Spirit Festival (9–12). Yoga, talks and concerts with the Strait as a backdrop.
Saturday 10: the big day
- Grand Procession of Arcos de la Frontera (from 17:00). Eleven brotherhoods and bands from all over Andalusia march through the old town to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the local brotherhoods’ council. A first-rate event in the cofrade calendar — Saturday is the day to see it. Poster and details.
- Retro Chiclana (10 and 11, 10:00–20:00, free entry). Arcade machines, classic consoles with tube TVs, microcomputers, virtual reality, manga and cosplay at the Centro de Iniciativas Juveniles Box. Tournaments on Saturday, finals on Sunday.
- Sierra Sur Ecofestival (Zahara de la Sierra, 10 and 11). Macaco and Elefantes on Saturday, Seguridad Social on Sunday, plus workshops, kayaking and paddle surfing at La Playita, in the heart of Grazalema Natural Park. Full programme.
- Trail Pueblos Blancos (Setenil, Torre Alháquime, Olvera and Alcalá del Valle). A thousand runners in the 70 km ultra; places sold out in five days. If you’re not running, it’s a good day to watch it pass through the white villages.
Sunday 11: to wrap up
- Finals of the Mundialito and of the Retro Chiclana tournaments.
- Last day of the Sierra Sur Ecofestival and the Tarifa Spirit Festival.
- The Sierra Livestock Fair in Benaoacaz (9–12) closes its programme of contests, market and workshops.
- Zahara de los Atunes Retinto Route (7–12): dishes built around this beef in local bars.
And in Conil: the chickpea takes over
Here’s where I put my money where my mouth is, because the weekend hits home. In Conil we celebrate the 5th Chickpea Gastronomic Days, from Friday 9 to Monday 12, organised by the San Patricio Cereal Cooperative (celebrating its 40th anniversary), Jóvenes Restauradores and Los Borriquetes:
- Friday 9, opening day at Hacienda Los Pipas: Conil cooks prepare 13 dishes with the local chickpea as the star, and proceeds from the bar go to Conil Solidario.
- From Saturday 10 to Monday 12, a gastronomic route through 15 restaurants in town — from La Fontanilla to Venta Pericón, via El Mercado or Casa Manolo — with traditional and innovative dishes around two local chickpea varieties. You can vote for the best one and enter a prize draw.
It’s a great way to get to know a product that has been grown here for centuries, and the perfect excuse to visit town on a calm October weekend. If you come for it, also check my food market guide and what to do in Conil with kids if you’re travelling with family.
And this is just the warm-up: at the end of the month come the Retinto Route and the Tapa Route, which I already wrote about here.
Practical notes
- Free: Mundialito, Retro Chiclana, the drive-in cinema and the Livestock Fair.
- Ticketed: Sierra Sur Ecofestival (limited capacity; on its official website) and seats for the Grand Procession.
- If you’re driving: the long weekend fills the coast; set off early with parking in mind and, where you can, explore on foot.
- Monday the 12th is a public holiday: several of these events (Mundialito, chickpea days) run through that day.
