Retinto Route and Tapa Route in Conil: the autumn food season you can't miss
If Conil is known for one thing in the food world, it’s its routes. I’m not talking about hiking trails — though those are great too, and I recommend my Roche cliffs hiking guide if you like walking by the sea — but those events where the whole village becomes one giant tapa crawl. And October is the star month: the Retinto Route and the Tapa Route share the spotlight of Conil’s autumn food scene.
As a local and host, here’s everything: what they are, when they are, how to take part, and why it’s worth planning a getaway around them.
Retinto Route: the retinto cow takes centre stage
From 23 October to 2 November 2026, Conil celebrates the XIII Gastronomic Retinto Route, one of the three major food routes organised annually by the Town Council together with the Young Restaurateurs Association (the others are the Huerta Route in spring and the Tuna Route in May-June).
The star is retinto meat, an autochthonous cattle breed from the La Janda region with a designation of origin. The animals graze freely on local pastures, and the meat is known for its intense flavour and texture. It’s a zero-kilometre product that’s almost a religion here.
How it works
- 16 participating establishments (bars and restaurants in the village) offer special menus featuring retinto meat.
- There are two competition categories: traditional (stew, cheek, pepper sirlois…) and innovative (creative proposals fusing retinto with contemporary techniques or seafood).
- Tapa + drink at a fixed price at each stop (check the route map for exact pricing).
- A professional jury and the public vote for the best tapas.
The big weekend: showcase and competition
The heart of the route takes place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October in the municipal marquee around the Torre de Guzmán and Santa Catalina squares. There you’ll find:
- The gastronomic showcase: establishments present their proposals, both traditional and innovative, made with local retinto and zero-kilometre products.
- The gastronomic competition in both categories (on Sunday).
- Live showcookings with chefs and farmers showing cuts and preparations.
- Live music and a festive atmosphere.
It’s the best moment to get a sense of the variety of creations before hitting the participating bars.
Participating restaurants
Some of the establishments that usually take part (the definitive list is published on the Turismo Conil app and on posters around town):
- Bar el Punto de Encuentro
- Mercado Gastronómico Antantié
- Bocinegro Tabanco Marino
- Séptimo Arte Gastrobar
- Restaurante Mirador El Roqueo
- Restaurante Playa
- Bar restaurante El Mercado
- Restaurante Feduchy Foodie’s Corner
- Restaurante Casa Manolo Fuguilla
- Taberna Las Quince Letras
- Parrilla Venta El Andaluz
- Vintage Cocktail Bar
- Restaurante Malabata
- Restaurante Francisco La Fontanilla
- Hotel Restaurante Blanco y Verde
Tapa Route: the classic autumn crawl
If the Retinto Route is the Town Council’s “official” food event, the Tapa Route is the people’s party: organised by the Conil Business and Commerce Association (AEC) with the Town Council’s support, and its vibe is more about crawling between bars with locals and visitors.
The October 2025 edition (XII Tapa Route) ran from 3 to 12 October, coinciding with the Hispanidad long weekend. The April 2026 edition (XIII) was the spring one. The autumn Tapa Route is a well-established event that usually repeats dates around the 12 October bank holiday.
How it works
- Around 30-33 establishments take part (bars, restaurants, cafés and ice-cream parlours).
- Each venue prepares a special tapa (and in some cases a dessert) served with a drink included for 4 euros.
- The route is divided into five colour-coded zones: orange, blue, red, green and violet (the last one for desserts).
- You pick up a Tapaporte at any participating venue and get it stamped with each purchase.
- With at least one stamp from each zone you can vote for your favourite tapas and drop your passport in the ballot box to enter the prize draw.
- The first 50 to complete their passport with 15 stamps from different establishments get a direct gift.
- There are prize draws for trips (previous editions: a trip for two to Tenerife or the Canary Islands) and other sponsor prizes.
What to expect
The Tapa Route is more informal than the Retinto Route: no chef competition or central marquee, just a bar-to-bar crawl all over the village. The streets fill with atmosphere, bars bring out their best creations, and it’s a great way to discover new and classic local establishments.
Tapas range from the most traditional Cádiz cuisine (shrimp omelette, fried cuttlefish, fried fish) to innovative proposals with local products. And for those with a sweet tooth, the violet dessert zone is the perfect way to end the crawl.
Planning your foodie getaway
If you want to make the most of Conil’s autumn food season, here’s my advice:
- Early October: Tapa Route (if the autumn 2026 edition is confirmed, probably around the 12 October bank holiday).
- Late October: Retinto Route (23 Oct – 2 Nov), with the big weekend on 24-25.
- Accommodation: prices in October are much lower than in August and the village is peaceful. If you’re looking for a base, check availability at the apartment.
- Book ahead: participating restaurants fill up, especially at weekends.
- Download the Turismo Conil app: that’s where you’ll find the updated maps of participating establishments and their offerings.
More to do in Conil this October
If you come for the food, there’s more to enjoy:
- Zombie Zone (3 October): the village becomes a live-action horror game. I cover it in my Zombie Zone post.
- Espacios (10 October): Nacho Loring presents his album at the Casa de la Cultura - Teatro Municipal, 8:30 PM.
- Halloween (31 October): workshops, storytelling and themed gastronomy at Camping Taiga.
- Hiking: the Pinar de Roche and the cliffs are at their autumn best, with mild temperatures and fewer people.
October is, without a doubt, one of the best months to visit Conil: the sea is still warm enough for a swim, the village is peaceful, and food is the main attraction. See you on the route.
